BioChemistry- Krebs Cycle

Now comes the day when one must put aside all that is important to dedicate ones life to the memorization of biochemical reactions. 
Current subjects of torture include, but are not limited to, glycolysis  and the Krebs cycle. 
In themselves, they are not hard to understand, but the steps at times can be a bit daunting.

I am such a student that need visuals to learn. Or, better yet, I enjoy coming up with the stupidest rhymes or songs in order to memorize something.
I recently found this magical song, and have memorized the Krebs cycle in no time.

location. For example mud from shoes or wheel wells can be used to show a suspect or their
vehicle was at the site of a body dump.
Soil is an extremely complex material with both organic and inorganic components that come
from natural and man-made origins. Forensic analysis typically focuses on physical
characteristics such as color and density, with elemental analysis as a final step. In this lab you
will compare the color and particle size distributions in order to identify the origin of a soil

.....errr nope. You see this gear is not something this creature, know as a Issus nymph, simply ate while savaging for food, it is actually part of its body.

Yup, you heard that right. It is a part of its body.
You see, these little buggers have the uncanny ability to jump really high, really fast. And it is all thanks to the mechanical gear little portion of their legs.

Gummy Bear Meets Potassium Chlorate Reaction!

The Crime

Rain poured down in sheets outside a lonely jail cell were a criminal known as C12H22O11 awaited his fate. His crimes were so high, that morality had ceased to exist in his world. Destruction, death, and unbelievable horror followed him everywhere that he had ventured. The blood of countless victims stained his hands. And for his crimes, he was being sentenced to death.
The Method

The courts decided to make his execution an example to deter criminals across the nation. They brought in doctors, physicists, and chemists from around the world to collaborate on the worst method possible. They debated for countless hours. Ethics and morels were forgotten during the grueling dark two weeks of devising the most horrendous method of death for such a criminal. Late at night on the fourteenth day, a solution was reached. The C12H22O11 was known to have a passion for arson in his killings, so it was decreed that he would die by a similar means.

How Trace Transfer posses a Problem For the TSA in Bomb Detection?

In recent years the Transportation Security Administration(TSA) has placed new security measures at certain airports that require random swaps of passenger’s hands for explosive residue. This measure was put into effect after the Christmas Day attempt bombing in 2009 of the Northwest Airlines Flight 253. While this safety measure was put into effect for the wellbeing of the American public, it also has the potential to do the opposite. Jay Stanley, an attorney and privacy expert with the American Civil Liberties as quoted by CNN saying: “[The TSA] are basically looking for particles of explosives, which is not something that people normally have." While the average person may not have explosives or come in direct contact with them, this does not weed out to fact that a normal person might come in contact with explosive residue though transfer.

Forensics: The Truth Behind the Shows


A man is found dead with a bullet wound in his chest. Who did it? Since there is blood spatter, a gun, and tire depressions at the scene, this question is best left for the forensics and investigators. At this stage, many people become confused on proper procedures. Many believe that the scene will be investigated by six people, who will collect the evidence, process the evidence at a lab, question the suspects, and arrest the bad guys all in the space of about an hour. I am so sorry to disappoint everyone out there that believes this to be true because, it’s not. Contrary to what many people believe the processing and handling of evidence, the appearance and workings of a corpse, and how forensic evidence, is applied to the criminal justice system in order to catch criminals, is not a quick six person job....

The Story of Cadavers


What happens to a body when a person dies? Does it end up in a grave, cremated, or decomposing in a creepy neighbor’s backyard

It may, but it could go on to be so much more. A body can go on to have, in a sense, a life after death. Bodies that are dedicated to science go on to have curious second lives as cadavers.  They have new jobs and a new life where their efforts save and improve millions of lives.

 How is this possible, one is may ask? Well, for one, cadavers do not have to do much more than lie around while they are manipulated by the living. They just lie there and regard researchers with nonjudgmental gazes while they are used in all sorts of manners to better understand the human body.  Cadavers are used by medical doctors to perfect techniques, to better understand decomposition, and to better understand forensic applications, but these are the blander uses for cadavers. The cadavers that really get to experience a new life are those who are used as crash test dummies. It seems weird to use human bodies as crash test dummies, but through their enthusiastic devotion to be crashed into concrete walls, they save many lives.

Forensic Science 101

Yes, I am studying forensic science. No, you don't understand what I do. Crime Scene Shows that are so popular over the past few years have greatly misled the public about what, those of the criminal justice system, do.

            A man is found dead with a bullet wound in his chest. Who did it? Since there is blood spatter, a gun, and tire depressions at the scene this question is best left for the forensics and investigators. At this stage many people become confused on proper procedures. Many believe that the scene will be investigated by six people, who will collect the evidence, process the evidence at a lab, question the suspects, and arrest the bad guys all in the space of about an hour. I am so sorry to disappoint everyone out there that believes this to be true because it’s not.  Contrary to what many people believe the processing and handling of evidence, the appearance and workings of a corpse, and how forensic evidence is applied to the criminal justice system in order to catch criminals, is not a quick six person job. 
        


1. We have one job. We do not work with guns one minute, blood the next, and then cut up a body.


The processing and handling of scenes and data fall onto the shoulders of a broad group of forensic scientists. First there are those who process and handle a scene, these scientists are known as Crime Scene Investigators(CSI's). They are responsible for collecting and documenting evidence at crime scenes. Collecting this data isn’t always easy. These scientists are the first to the scene, and CSIs see everything. These scientists have to get into the gore at crime scene to collect evidence without destroying the evidence in the process, or losing their lunch for that matter. CSIs collect blood, fingerprints, fibers, and objects connected to crimes that need to be analyzed. Everything that is taken from a scene must be documented, including where it was found, what it is or looks like, and the objects distance from the body or another main stationary object. Everything at a scene will be photographed at least three different times. There can be over a thousand photographs for one crime scene. Depending on what evidence was found, the evidence will then go to a specific scientist to be processed for further analysis. Blood will go to DNA analysts and toxicologists, the DNA analysts will test for DNA matches, while the toxicologists will look for drugs or other abnormal properties in the blood. Fingerprints will go to, big surprise here; fingerprint analysts. These analysts will remove fingerprints from objects, run fingerprints through the system, and compare prints. If a firearm is involved the firearm will go to firearm analysts. These firearm specialists can tell what kind of firearm that was used, where the firearm was bought, where a person was standing when they shot the firearm, and who or what the shooter was aiming for. These are just some of the things and some of the forensic scientists involved in processing data from a crime scene, and as this shows forensics is no, tight nit, six man team. There may be six people in every category involved. Unlike television show processing data in real life takes a lot longer than an hour. Getting this data can take weeks, even months. This is because the test can be very long, and because there is so much evidence to process, due to the large number of scenes and back log.

2. We do not carry a gun as part of our jobs.
3. We are scientists, not a negotiators nor interrogators.
4. My ability to make an arrest is the same as yours; a citizens arrest.
5. Tests take days/weeks/months not minutes.
6. I wish some of the machines that they use were real, unforgettably they are not.
7. Tests offer statistics, not certainty.

I could go on and on, but I will not. But, the next times some one informs you that they are a forensic scientist think twice before saying, "Oh, so your like one of those guys on "CSI" right?" .............. -.- "no"..

Ban Dihydrogen monoxide


This petition is for the complete ban of Dihydrogen monoxide. 

Dihydrogen monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can include excessive sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance. For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death.
 

Dihydrogen monoxide:
 
- is the major component of acid rain
 
- contributes to the "greenhouse effect"
 
- it can cause severe burns in its gaseous state
 
- contributes to erosion
 
- accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals
 
- may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes
 
- has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients
 

Despite the dangers, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:
 
- as an industrial solvent and coolant.
 
- in nuclear power plants.
 
- in the production of styrofoam.
 
- as a fire retardant.
 
- in many forms of cruel animal research.
 
- as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products.
 

Companies dump waste DHMO into rivers and the ocean, and nothing can be done to stop them because this practice is still legal.
 

The American government has refused to ban the production, distribution, or use of this damaging chemical due to its "importance to the economic health of this nation." In fact, the navy and other military organizations are conducting experiments with DHMO, and designing multi-billion dollar devices to control and utilize it during warfare situations. Hundreds of military research facilities receive tons of it through a highly sophisticated underground distribution network. Many store large quantities for later use.

This is totally horrible, we can't let people get away with this. We have to join together as one and abolish this threat! Are you with me!

Why We Love Chocolate

Not finishing a chocolate bar is unheard of.
But why do we constantly fall into such temptation?
Why can we not say no?

It's really quite simple.

Caffeine, theobromine, and other such stimulants.
And scientists at the Neurosciences Institute in San Diego believe that chocolate have a similar effect on the brain as marijuana does.

Anatoxin


Anatoxin, oh how this alkaloid fascinates me. This toxin, derived from Anabaeno, a species of cyanobacteria, is commonly referred to as; the Very Fast Death Factor. Interesting, is it not? 
So, you may be wondering, where did this name come from?
Well, this toxin is native to the Murray River in Australia, and is described as looking like "a thick scum like green oil paint." This toxin emitted by this algae rendered a portion of the Murray river toxic to wildlife. Any animal who drunk from it, would become extremely ill, and die a horrible death. 
Why is this? Well, Anatoxin is a potent neurotoxin. It causes death my paralysis of it's victims. It basically mimics acetylcholine and binds the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. So basically, your sodium channels become locked open which causes over-stimulation thus causing fatigue and paralysis.

Capital Punishment in Connecticut



So, what is capital punishment? How does it effect us? And, who deserves this verdict? These are good questions, and I will try my best to answer them. Though, to make it easier, I restricted myself to capital punishment in relation to the state of Connecticut(mainly do to resent events there).

Capital Offences are punishable by death in “58 different countries “ (Introducation).  This Capital punishment, as it is known, is a practice that has been used in most societies dating as far back as human history, though now it is a practice that is carried out under legal systems and courts. But what is the purpose of this punishment? It is often human nature to seek revenge for wrong doing. An eye for an eye, if it were. These countries believe that high crimes, such as aggravated murder, treason, drug trafficking, and espionage are crimes that can only be paid with the life on the wrong doer.  Capital Punishment is a punishment that has been a seat for much debate over the decades. There are those who are in favor and those that strongly oppose capital punishment.  Each of the United States has their own set of laws and regulations regarding this issue. And over the past decade many states have decided to go out of favor for this penalty. In recent news, Connecticut has recently gone to become the 17th state to abolish the death penalty (Introduction). But what was the journey like that got us to this point?

Let us explore the history of the death penalty for a bit. Where did it come from? And when did it first become part of American law? Well, Britain had a lot to do with it. Britain influenced America’s use of “of the death penalty more than any other country” (Introduction). European settlers brought the practice with them when they settled into the new world. And the first recorded execution was that of “Captain George Kendall in the Jamestown colony in Virginia in 1608” (Introduction). And, in the state of Connecticut, it has been part of law since we became a state in 1788. In the time between then, up till 2005, the state of Connecticut has had 126 executions (Capital).  Many of which consisted of death by hanging till 1937 when James McElroy was executed by the Electric chair, and Michael Ross by lethal Injection in 2005 (Capital). The last execution for rape was conducted in 1817, and the last public execution happened in 1833.  Since 1830, murder is the only capital crime for which anyone has been executed in the state of Connecticut. Federal court decisions since the late 1950s, particularly the strictures of Furman v. Georgia (1972) expanded defendants’ rights. And,  for the last half century, Connecticut has retain the death penalty, but the “appeals process is of such long duration that only convicts such as Joseph Taborsky in 1960 and Michael Ross in 2005, who waived their rights and “volunteered” for death, have been executed” (Kirk). The state of Connecticut has had a long and bumpy ride when it has come to the death penalty.
            While the death penalty was recently repealed the death penalty, it is not the first time that Connecticut has been without it. But then again, the Furman v. Georgia case had that affect.  Connecticut reinstated the death penalty on January 10, 1973 (Capital). But since that reinstatement, only one person has been executed, and that was the serial Killer and rapist Michael Bruce Ross on May 13, 2005 (Capital). Ross was convicted of the “kidnapping, rape, and murder of four teenage girls in New London, Connecticut in 1983 and 1984” (Michael). Ross was a serial killer in every sense of the word. This was extremely apparent when he recounted his murders. But at trial, while Ross confessed to strangling the woman and sexually assaulting all but one of the them, he pleaded insanity (Michael). This plea did not hold up in court, and Ross was sentenced to death under the “statute enacted by the Connecticut state legislature seven years prier” (Michael). The main problem regarding Ross, though, was his willingness to die. He demonstrated his instability by appealing many different times to be executed or retried. When he would do so, he was deemed unfit for execution, since he was not in the right state of mind.  It was not until he was relatively stabilized on medications, and he no longer showed mental instability, that the state of Connecticut when ahead with his sentence of death. And on May, 13 2005, Michael Bruce Ross was executed via lethal injection.
            It is because of murders like Ross that there are just as many people for capital punishment as there are against it. Advocates of the death penalty argue that it is an important for preserving law and order. They believe that it helps to deter crime. Another argument is the fact that the death penalty, in their opinion, costs less the life imprisonment. An “eye for an eye honors the victim, helps console grieving families, and ensures that the perpetrators of the crime” will never be able to cause future harm to others (Kirk). Pro’s for the death penalty are often labled to be out for revenge, and at many times this can be true. They want to see an equal justice, in their eyes, to be dished out.   
            If capital punishment is used to punish a person for doing such horrid crimes, like Michael Ross did, then why the constant stream of protests against it? Some people believe that the death penalty “violates the constitutional ban against cruel and unusual punishment and the guarantees of due process of law and of equal protection under the law” (Bedeau). This was extremely apparent when execution was done by hangings, and later by electrocution, since both forms caused pain to the individual and did not always work the first time around. Some people make the argument that the state should not play God in determining who has the right to life or not. Then we have the criminal justice system itself. Many times when it comes to such a sentence, it comes down to the “skill of a defendants attorneys, the race of the victim, and where

the crime took place” that will play a major role on whether they will be charged with life or the death penalty (Bedeau). To many people, they argue, are wrongly sentenced to death as well due to this.  And other then the morals behind the sentence, people protest that it is a waste of taxpayers’ money.  Often these criminals are in jail for a long period of time before they ever get executed.
            Many of these issues have led to the repeal of the death penalty in the state of Connecticut; though it took some persuasion to get there. Connecticut legislature passed a bill to abolish the death penalty in 2009, but that bill was vetoed by Governor M. Jodi Rell. And then once again, it was brought up by legislature in 2012, and this time it passed (Introduction). On April 25, 2012, Governor Dannel Malloy signed the bill into law that repeals the death penalty; thus making Connecticut the 17th state to do such. This new law “does not apply to the 11 inmates who are currently on death row in the state” though (Kirk). 
            Because of this repeal, criminal can no longer be sentenced to death, but those eleven will still be. Most notable of those eleven, are Steven Hayes and Joshua Komisarjevsky  , the two men guilty of the Cheshire Home invasion that took place in July of 2007 (***).  Steven was convicted in October 2011 while Joshua was in January 2012. These criminals planned on simply robbing the house, but instead it turned into one of the worst multiple murders that the state of Connecticut has ever seen (Cheshire). They beat William Petit at gun point, and restrained him. They then forced Hawke Petit to withdraw $15,000, and purchase $10 in gasoline. When Hawke was taken back to her house, it was to be  raped by Hayes, and witness her 11 year old daughters sexal assault. Hawke was then strangled by Hayes when he learned

that her husband, William, had escaped. They then set fire to the house after tying the daughters, still alive, to their beds.  It is one the worst crimes that the state of Connecticut has seen, and it will do down in history, for both its horridness and for being the last crime committed that led to the death penalty (Cheshire).
            The state of Connecticut has a long history with capital punishment, from the early days of the first colonies in America, to recent tragic events. While some crimes have been so horrid that they have called for the death penalty. It can to the states conclusion that the benefits did not outweigh the costs. While, in my opinion, criminals like Michael Ross and the Cheshire home invaders deserved what was handed down to them, there have been so many other cases where the defendant was innocent, or it all came down to the skills of an attorney. Those against it argued that it was a waste of tax money, that it offered no type of deterrence to future criminals, and that it often can lead to the death of innocent parties. While, at the same time, those that are for it argue that an “eye for an eye” is the only way to go about this punishment. They strongly believe that it will act as a deterrence for future criminals . When it came down to the fact, Connecticut decided to do with that that offered up the most benefit. A majority if the voters in the state of Connecticut   So, it has come down to the fact that the state of Connecticut has repealed the death penalty for the benefit.

Octanitrocubane

I totally enjoy forensic science, and chemistry is my obsession. So that leads one to wonder about what my future profession may be. Well, here is the thing, I love explosives. If it goes boom, I will find it fascinating (no, not the bomb crazed fanatic arsonist type of way, I really just enjoy the complexity of the reactions that cause them). 
And recently, I came across a compound that has made me crazy to know more.   
Octanitrocubane(bit of a mouthful isn't it?) This compound is so complex, awesome, and, way to expensive to synthesize in any great quantity(trust me this is a good thing).

So. what is it? Well, basically put, it is an extremely powerful (likely the most powerful at this point) non-nuclear explosive. This leads one to think that such a compound would be highly unstable. And that is the catch. Octanitrocubane is such a stable compound that it needs a detonator to go boom. The fact that it is so stable would make it a great explosive to use in construction as well as many military applications. .
But, the most interesting thing about this compound has to be its shape. It is its shape that lead many scientists to be extremely doubtful to its ability to ever be synthesized. Octanitrocubane has a cubane of carbon at its center. The reason why people were sceptic was the fact that carbon forms 109 degree angles, not 90 degree ones. But, a Professor from the University of Chicago would prove them wrong. Prof. Philip Eaton was able to synthesize cubane in 1964.


And in 2000 he was able to get nitro groups ( a component found in almost every explosive) to attach.
Because of this, Octanitrocubane has a  20% greater performance than HMX. This mainly do to the breakdown of the explosive into CO2 and N2, and the absence of water vapor.
Sadly only small amounts have been produced in the lab, not quite enough for performance testing as of yet.
