Soil Evidence

Forensic Examination of Soil Evidence
Soil is a form of forensic evidence typically used to place an individual or item at a specific
location. For example mud from shoes or wheel wells can be used to show a suspect or their
vehicle was at the site of a body dump.
Soil is an extremely complex material with both organic and inorganic components that come
from natural and man-made origins. Forensic analysis typically focuses on physical
characteristics such as color and density, with elemental analysis as a final step. In this lab you
will compare the color and particle size distributions in order to identify the origin of a soil
sample.
